Crock Pot Turnip Greens

1 lb. fresh turnip greens
1 C. water
2 C. chicken broth
1/4 lb. smoked pork jowl, cubed
1 small sweet onion, finely chopped
1 1/2 T. packed brown sugar
good pinch of red pepper flakes
salt and pepper to taste

Fill a clean sink with cold water and place the greens in the water pressing them up and down to clean. Drain the water and repeat 1 more time. Drain and then chop the greens. Place them in the crock pot and add the water and broth.
Meanwhile, cook the cubed pork jowl to render the grease and lightly crisp up. Add the onion and cook till it begins to soften.
Remove from the heat and pour directly on top of the greens (grease too). Add the brown sugar and pepper flakes.
Cover and cook on high for 4-5 hours or to your desired doneness.
You many need to add a little more water or broth, it depends on how much pot likker you want when they are done. Season with salt and pepper before serving.
